Discourse Analysis in Perfume Advertisement

Gender Element in Wonderstruck Perfume Advertisement

Usually when we look at perfume advertisement for men, we will be presented with the figure of man attracting girl attention with the use of perfume as if a man can get girls’ attention easily just using the perfume. By contrast, the same thing will not occur in perfume advertisement for women.  Why was that thing happened? The gender element is more prominent in this thing. The advertiser use gender element in perfume advertisement actually not far from gender understanding in society where men is superior than women, so that the advertiser cannot use the figure of woman attracting men attention in women perfume advertisement. The advertiser only use the figure of beautiful woman in women perfume advertisement based on the understanding. Take a look for Wonderstruck perfume advertisement, the advertiser use Taylor Swift as the model of perfume. The theme of advertisement is “the beginning of something magical” with the background of nature and the outfit of model as a princess is match with gender understanding in society.
